UPDATED on December 1, 2011.

The list of early Kennel Club registered Beardies was first presented on this page last August (2011) thanks to the efforts of Elsa Sell who typed up the information from issues of The Gazette—a monumental task. However, Ciara Farrell, Librarian for the Kennel Club indicated our list was not complete. Ms. Farrell started with the 1912 Kennel Gazette and began checking under "Any Other Variety." That allowed her to add names we had not known about previously.

Ms. Farrell also provided information about colours and/or colour combinations for registered Beardies from 1912 through 1939. That information follows the List of Registrations.

COLOURs for Registered Bearded Collies 1912-1939

Thanks to Ciara Farrell of The Kennel Club for her research. We learned that the Kennel Club's microfilms for early registrations of Bearded Collies included 33 legible colour or colour combinations. Some colours were repeated on several registrations, i.e., there were a number of dogs with the colour descriptor "Black & White" and "Steel Gray." Also, it was interesting to learn approximately five were listed as a colour of "Cairngorm." Some registrations had information that was "illegible."

We learned from one of our contributors to the website, Dr. Lynne Sharpe, that "Cairngorm" is the name of a semi-precious stone found in the Cairngorm mountains of Scotland and described as brown or yellow.

A question was recently presented to Ms. Farrell on whether any "blue merle" had ever been registered by The Kennel Club. Ms. Farrell verified that there was one Bearded Collie registered in April 1933, with the colour "Blue Merle." She was:

Some colours are highlighted followed by an asterisk mark. That is because those particular colour combinations could have been "merle" as well. The list below confirms some of the colours found in several modern working Beardies which appear on this website.
